Silence

Lists: Drama, Historical, HPR Selects, Religious re-telling

Brief Synopsis: "Two Jesuit priests, Sebastião Rodrigues and Francis Garrpe, travel to seventeenth century Japan which has, under the Tokugawa shogunate, banned Catholicism and almost all foreign contact. There they witness the persecution of Japanese Christians at the hands of their own government which wishes to purge Japan of all western influence. Eventually the priests separate and Rodrigues travels the countryside, wondering why God remains silent while His children suffer."

Sober Film Critic James Brown97 - Amidst the storm that's brewing in America (possibly golden showers in the forecast), it's a time when the idea of a Muslim ban or registry floats around from our newly inaugurated Tweeter-in-Chief. To have a vicious, unrelenting film about religious oppression arrive at this moment is a cinematic reminder that history has the unfortunate tendency of repeating itself.
