Beautiful landscape shots of the English countryside. The ability to transport you to a time long past. I was taken with the story, in fact, I've seen the movie twice, but it feels to me like a glorified historical romance novel. I suppose I'll have to actually read Hardy's book to understand what makes it such a literary success - both then (1874) and present day.
