Title Year Rating Rank Review
Departed, The2006961
Gandhi1982952(full review) - A bit overly long, which made it a bit tough to watch, but excellently performed and very insightful. Should be required viewing.
Shakespeare in Love1998933
Birdman2014925 - As we walked towards the theater exit, an older woman told me, a stranger, that she hated the movie. I felt quite different about it than she did, but I can understand where she's coming from. It isn't for everyone, but it's a damn fine film from all aspects.
Forrest Gump1994907
Kramer vs. Kramer1979907
On The Waterfront1954907
Rain Man1988907
Argo20128812(full review)

Last Emperor, The19878517
Silence of the Lambs, The19918517
West Side Story19618517 - I don't normally enjoy musicals, but I really enjoyed this film.
In the Heat of the Night19678426
Sting, The19738327 - Not enough time spent tying up loose ends and explaining how things fit together, but if you don't need FULL closure it is still a really clever movie.
A Beautiful Mind20018228
Kings Speech, The20108228
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King20038228
Million Dollar Baby20048228
No Country for Old Men20078228

Godfather: Part II, The19748033(full review)
Hurt Locker, The20088033(full review)
Schindlers List19938033
Slumdog Millionaire20088033
Spotlight20158033(full review) - Intriguing and important story, but nothing special about the way it was told. Above average movie, decent dialogue. Decent acting. Nothing special.
Terms of Endearment19838033(full review)
The Apartment19607547(full review)
Annie Hall19777448
Dances with Wolves19907448
Ordinary People19807250
English Patient, The19966951
Chariots of Fire19816752 - Decent story but the pacing was sluggish, ironic because the film was about Olympic runners. There really wasn't much in the way of tension or drama, and although they could have juxtaposed the main characters, they didn't make much of an attempt. I will be interested to watch the other films nominated that year to see how this could have won.
Tom Jones19636353
Midnight Cowboy19696254
A Man for All Seasons19666055
Out of Africa19856055(full review) - Great acting and good cinematography. Sluggish pacing. Awkward transitions. Mediocre dialogue.
Crash20044457(full review) - Too contrived, and although the story is interestingly complex, the dialogue is sub-par and the characters are way too stereotypical. Huge disappointment.
